from the persecuted
Although I’ve suffered many years
subjected to degrading might,
I won’t presume to blame my peers.
Their sense of justice thought it right
to try a guy who paid his dues
while subject to the law and draft.
Forget my Mom who saw me lose
my civil rights while yokels laughed
at watching me endure disgrace.
I reckon being decent folk
they’ll also relish losing face
while their own loved ones bear the yoke
of fear and shame imposed on me.
But I don’t wish them parity.
